There are so many cancer survivors who I’ve spoken with over the years who are still sick after treatment. My heart goes out to them, because I am one of them. This comprehensive list of side effects from cancer treatment combined with symptoms of thyroid problems will help you to connect the dots if you aren’t recovering properly. Getting to the root cause is priceless. I know what you are going through. Here are your first steps. You aren’t alone in this journey.

Helping others fuels my drive. God has blessed me with my health issues and journey to help others.  After treatment ended, at every doctor’s appointment, I would show up with a list of symptoms, and leave without answers. All of these symptoms were common after cancer treatment (and especially chemo). But little did I know that they are also the exact same symptoms as thyroid problems. It took over one year for me to be diagnosed with Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis. Six years later, I’m still struggling but pushing forward every day.

I know what it’s like to have awesome doctors not “get it.” I know what it’s like to have people not take you seriously. There is a strong connection between cancer treatment/chemo and thyroid issues. I don’t know this from any kind of scientific research. I know this by speaking with many cancer survivors who are still suffering.  You aren’t alone.

The Hypothyroid Mom published a list of 300 symptoms of hypothyroid problems.  Yes. 300. I started here first. Then I researched and compiled a list of cancer treatment and chemo-related symptoms, and compared the two lists. Now, just because you may have common symptoms after cancer treatment is over, doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s your thyroid. But if you aren’t recovering, and you haven’t been checked, it’s worth taking a look at the list and talking to your doctor.

My Common Symptoms

And just because I thought it would be fun to count my list of random symptoms, I did. I counted over 100 symptoms which continued after cancer treatment that I did not have before I was diagnosed with cancer. Now, I’m not sure if these symptoms were from chemo, radiation, or because I have Hashimoto’s.  Here are a few of my “favorites”:

  • Memory loss
  • Poor concentration
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Need naps in the afternoon
  • Wake feeling tired
  • Weight gain
  • Night sweats
  • Low immune system
  • Recurrent sinus infections
  • Candida (yeast)
  • Oversensitive hearing
  • Vertigo
  • Hair loss
  • Rashes
  • Migraines
  • Joint stiffness
  • Food allergy
  • Food sensitivity
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
  • Gluten Sensitivity/Intolerance
  • Flatulence
  • Premature or delayed menopause
  • Adrenal Fatigue
  • Dizziness
