When I hosted the Mystery Symptom Summit, I had no idea of the wealth of information I would learn from the doctors I interviewed. A lot of the information was common sense. But these 10 weird health hacks stood out more than all of the others. The doctors swear by them, and they seem to really work not only for themselves but also for their patients! Number five will even take you back 50 years. Do you practice any of these health hacks?

We all know about eating healthy and exercise and sleeping well and reducing stress. But after interviewing these doctors and health professionals, I was excited to hear how many of them promote these health hacks. Fair warning… they are all pretty high on the woo-woo scale. I’ve tried all of them. Some of these health hacks I’ve been doing for a while, some only recently. A few of them are actually pretty big needle movers for me. The rest certainly help me to feel better, even to a small degree. Are they weird? Some might say yes.

How far do you want to take your health hacking?
Minimize Blue Light Exposure
Do you have trouble falling asleep or toss and turn in the middle of the night?
According to James and Tristan Swanwick, “There are lights on our screens that we stare into at nighttime after the sun is long gone. Blue light is in your cell phone, TV screen, computer, bathroom and kitchen lights, alarm clock – almost everywhere. When we stare at these screens – as you may be doing now – it tricks our bodies into thinking it’s still daytime. This means we don’t produce as much melatonin.”
Melatonin is the hormone that regulates your sleep/wake cycle.
Since it’s impossible to live in a bubble and not be away from our cell phones, tablets, computers and TV’s for any length of time, day glasses for screen glare and classic blue light blockers are often our practitioner’s favorite health hacks.
Remember when you were a kid and you ran around barefoot all of the time? Little did we know how many health benefits that grounding (or earthing) has! It’s not only a way to reconnect to the earth and nature but has scientifically proven health benefits. Whodathunk!?! Our bodies are full of electricity, and connecting to the ground provides electrical and chemical reactions through our feet. This may help to reduce inflammation, reduce stress, sleep better, increase energy, and even combat jetlag.
When I flew back and forth to California from Virginia, I grounded as soon as I could on each coast. I also had a whole slew of other anti-jetlag practices that I used, but as weird as I looked, I did it.
Earthing is obviously easy and free. Just step outside and onto the grass. But if your home or lifestyle doesn’t support this, there are grounding mats that are great health hacks to mimic this practice. You can use them on the floor at your desk or even on your bed.
It’s called the Emotional Freedom Technique or EFT or Tapping. It may help to combat anxiety, stress, insomnia, and even anger and other negative emotions. By using a tapping sequence on specific energy meridians on the body, along with a corresponding dialog, it may help to immediately clear your mind and emotional state.
I know personally, this health hack has helped me greatly in times of increased stress, dealing with emotional issues, and falling back to sleep in the middle of the night. It’s a good tool to have in your healing arsenal to pull out when you need it. It’s free, you can do it anywhere, and only takes a few minutes of your time.
Again, back to sleep. Our practitioners were 100% unanimous in that deep, restorative sleep was one of if not the top factor in improving the quality of your health.
Studies show the pressure of a weighted blanket simulates the feeling of a hug, encouraging the production of serotonin and calming the nervous system – similar to compression therapy or Deep Pressure Touch. Weighted blankets may help to improve poor sleep due to anxiety, insomnia, sensory issues, chronic pain, PTSD, autism, ADD, ADHD, RLS, stress, and other sleep disorders.
Be sure to look for brands that support organic or chemical-free cotton and lead-free glass beads.
Full Moon Detox Challenge
Yes. Full Moon Detoxes are a thing. Complete with moon juice. Most of these detoxes are a wee bit out there on the woo woo scale. And that’s ok. I wanted to create one that was a little more normal. A little more not so out there. And one that was safe for you.

According to testing conducted by the Environmental Working Group, 250 chemicals were detected in American drinking water overall (160 of which are not regulated by the federal government). Even more worrying, 81 percent of systems tested had contaminants that have been linked to cancer. Some of the most notable offenders include Chloroform and Chromium-6, though more research still needs to be done on exactly how much of these we need to ingest to be at risk.
Contaminants found in water can be linked to diseases such as cancer, autoimmune diseases, diabetes, thyroid problems, brain diseases, and liver, kidney, and nervous system problems. The experts all agree on good quality water filtrations systems. Many of our experts have a whole home system, but even ones you keep under the kitchen sink and on your bathroom shower are better than none at all.
Reduce EMF Exposure
Electromagnetic radiation or electrosmog is all around us. It’s virtually impossible to work and live without having wifi and all of the corresponding devices such as smartphones, tablets, and laptops. Science is just beginning to uncover the dangers of EMF exposure, especially when it comes to autoimmune disease. Talk about mystery symptoms! EMF can cause some of the best. While it’s difficult to pinpoint the source, there are numerous anecdotal studies of health conditions improving when the exposure is eliminated or reduced.
EMF exposure can greatly harm your sleep patterns, especially if you sleep with your phone beside your bed. Turn it onto airplane mode while you sleep.
To help reduce exposure while on your phone or laptop, use EMF shields specifically designed to reduce the EMF radiation.
Protect Your Skin
Gorgeous, luminous skin isn’t just about wearing sunscreen in the summer. It’s about taking care of your skin from the inside out. Keep your skincare products clean and simple and for toxic-free options. Many skincare products contain chemicals that actually have an adverse effect on the skin (and many are endocrine disruptors – yikes!).
Look for products which are free of color, fragrance, oxybenzone, DEA, parabens, dioxin, PEG, and phthalates.

Parasites aren’t just found in third-world countries, millions are already infected in industrialized countries–they’re far more common than you realize and could be silently hampering your health. According to a 2014 press release by the Centers for Disease Control, “Most people think parasitic diseases occur in poor and developing countries or are infections they might pick up on a trip to a foreign country. However, parasitic infections also occur in the United States, and in some cases affect millions of people.
Often they can go unnoticed, with few symptoms. But many times the infections cause serious illnesses, including seizures, blindness, pregnancy complications, heart failure, and even death. Anyone—regardless of race or economic status—can become infected.” Fortunately, with awareness and appropriate care, parasites can be prevented and treated, once detected.
Always remember, you never want to go on a parasite cleanse without being under proper medical supervision, whether from a medical or naturopathic doctor.

DNA testing is all the rage these days. And for good reason. Many people are getting tested to try and understand their risks for certain health conditions that they may be predisposed to from birth. I get the hype. The more information you have about your own body, the better decisions you can make for your health.
But traditional DNA testing doesn’t give you the full picture. There’s more to your health than just your DNA.
IQYOU is like 23andMe on steroids. It’s not just about DNA. It’s a whole new world called EpiBioGenetics, which looks at DNA, together with other factors such as biochemistry, diet, lifestyle, toxins, and environment to give you a more complete picture of your health.
+ Wake Up to This
And one extra. I interviewed 30 of the top root-cause health practitioners in the world. At the end of each interview, I asked them what is the one thing they do every day to achieve optional health and wellness? What is your one non-negotiable? 98% of the answers revolved around how they wake up.
Start each and every day with gratitude and mindfulness. Give thanks for life and all of the good things in your world. Pray, meditate, read the Bible or some other spiritual literature. Whatever faith or spirituality you subscribe to, stop and center yourself before starting your day. I may be biased, but I think this is the best health hack ever!
I don’t get out of bed before I’m in that place. And it’s been one of the biggest game-changers for me.
