Did you recently receive a gratitude journal or bullet journal as a present? Or you want to purchase one for yourself? You may have heard that practicing gratitude helps with mindfulness. It does. It’s a great way to begin and end your day, to wrap your day in a package of love and blessings and thanksgiving.

Do I Have to be Religious?

You may wonder if you have to be a certain faith or add prayer to your gratitudes. The beauty of this – it’s all up to you! If you are a faith-based person, regardless of religion, you can incorporate your belief system into your gratitudes. If you are a more spiritual person, you can do the same. Even if you are more agnostic, you can still be thankful for what life has given you. When you list your gratitudes, you can choose to incorporate this practice in conjunction with your faith or spirituality, or not.

Being thankful is a universal activity. One of the reasons why it’s so awesome!

How to Start

When I first started practicing gratitude, I listed maybe one or two or three. But then I felt like that wasn’t good enough. I wanted to go bigger. Dealing with a chronic illness, it’s difficult to go big in anything, except maybe at the pharmacy. But I knew that I could go big with gratitudes, even on the tough days.

Start small. Begin with once a day, and list one or two things you are grateful for. As you get into the groove of it, start adding more, and strive for writing your gratitudes twice a day. I promise you that regardless of how you approach this, gratitude is a very good practice to incorporate into your life.

Gratitude Journal Morning Routine

In the morning, you want to be thankful for what is going to happen during your day. Make a list of 10 things that you are grateful for like they already happened. You want to send this out to someone or something. God, Universe… whatever religion or spiritual philosophy you subscribe to.

Dear ______

Today, [date], I am grateful to you for the manifestation of:

1.

2.

3.

and list 10.

This also gives you time to think about your day and set your intentions. How did you wake up feeling? Do you have a big meeting? Are you going to be on travel? Does your child have an activity? What are you struggling with? How would you like the outcome to be?

Gratitude Journal Evening Routine

The evening is going to be more of a traditional gratitude exercise. You want to be thankful for what has actually happened during the day. Make a list of 10 things that you are grateful for, that actually happened that day. Again, you want to send this out to someone or something. God, Universe… whatever religion or spiritual philosophy you subscribe to.

Dear ______

Today, [date], I am grateful to you for the manifestation of:

1.

2.

3.

and list 10.
