I know… I know… making the bed is an extra chore and something completely unnecessary and not worth the energy. I get it. But did you know that there are some major advantages to making your bed every morning? A study, which was conducted by an American mattress company, shows that there is in fact a link between how productive people are and making the bed. They found that 92% of the respondents said they felt “very productive” or “productive” after making the bed every morning.
Let’s take a look at some of the reasons to tidy those sheets.
1. Get Your Day Off To A Productive Start
It’s unlikely that there are many people who enjoy wasting a day and achieving nothing yet in our modern lives, it can be easy to become overwhelmed with the number of items on the to-do list. Coupled with this, it can be extremely difficult to get started in the morning but by taking the simple action of making the bed, you have already ticked one thing off the list which in turn will motivate you to complete more complex tasks. You might think of it as some sort of chain reaction, one task leading to the next and before you know it, your to-do list will be much smaller.

2. The Rest Of Your Bedroom Will Follow
Keeping your home clean and tidy can be somewhat of a mammoth task, especially if you live in a large home or one with a lot of people. But once the bed is made in the morning, you will find that you naturally want the rest of the room to scrub up too. Meeting this tidy and organized standard throughout the room will give you a sense of calm and peace whenever you enter the room.
3. Your Mental Health Will Benefit
It might sound impossible but making your bed can really contribute to lower stress levels and in turn, create an overall better mood. As we mentioned earlier, having a tidy bedroom can give you a much more relaxed feeling when you are in there and since we spend a third of our lives in our bedrooms, this calm is likely to resonate through our day to day lives. Living in an untidy and disorganized environment is likely to cause stress. We want to be happy. Not stressed.
4. Your Bed Will Be Cleaner
There has been some research that has suggested that making the bed might encourage dust mites to take up residence, but this has not been solidly proven and in fact, the opposite is true. By making your bed, you are covering the mattress with sheets and blankets which eliminates the amount of dust and dirt that can enter the bed. This means that your bed will be cleaner and much more inviting to climb in to after a long hard day of being productive. It has also been suggested that those who make their beds are likely to get a better night’s sleep.
5. Make Your Bedding Last Longer
While it is a good idea to regularly change your pillows and bedding, you don’t want to be having to do this too often as it can get expensive. When you make your bed each day, you are allowing your sheets to stay wrinkle-free and your pillows to remain fuller and fluffier for longer.

There are many more reasons that making the bed can benefit your life other than simply looking good. Amazingly, making the bed each morning can help your stress levels and even assist in creating healthy habits and completing your to-do list.
