The end of the school year brings a lack of focus and attention in even the best of students.  The sun is out, the air is warm, and the kids are dreaming about summer vacation.  While these seven strategies can be used any time during the entire school year, they are especially helpful in the spring when the kids have mentally checked out of homework and school.

Being married to a Green Beret, homework time at our house is run with military precision.  While this style certainly isn’t for everyone, it works for us (most of the time), and hopefully, some or all of these strategies will be helpful to improve the quality of homework time at your house.

1.  Maintain one dedicated homework spot with all of the age/grade tools and necessities easily visible.  If the homework station is typically in the child’s bedroom, and it needs to be moved to the kitchen for more adult supervision, then so be it.

2.  Maintain a regular homework schedule as much as you can around after school activities.  If age appropriate, include the child in the decision of the time that homework should be done.

3.  Communicate and repeat the importance and priority of homework time.  It will fall on deaf ears and eye rolls, but you still have to do it.

4.  Diffuse Essential Oils an hour before homework time.

5.  Be available.  Even if your child works well independently, be visibly available as a reminder for them to focus, and also that you are there to help.

6. For older teens, try Unfair Advantage by Bulletproof. Crazy, immediate focus!

7.  Stick to your guns.  This time of year, kids would rather take out the trash than sit down to do homework.  They will promise to “do it later,” “finish it in the morning,” or “finish it at study hall” but if you stand behind your word, they will come to realize that they don’t have any other option than to just do it.  #beentheredonethat #noscreens #sorrynotsorry
