Let me start by saying that the body is designed to heal itself. YOUR body is designed to heal itself.
Remember that papercut you had? What did you do? You applied some ointment and a bandage and within a few days, you couldn’t even see the cut anymore.
I’ll do you one better. Back in the day when I was mountain biking and racing, I fell and the handlebars on my bike impaled my 7th rib and broke it. Other than an MRI and/or a CT scan to check for internal damage, there is nothing a doctor can do to fix a broken rib. Other broken bones may require surgery or some kind of splint or cast. But broken or fractured ribs? You’re pretty much SOL.
I was sent home with painkillers and told to rest. (BTW – I took one and decided I would rather deal with the pain. They just weren’t for me.) Oh and let me give you a little piece of advice. If you ever break a rib… whatever you do… do NOT watch funny movies. Seriously. Laughing is always a great thing to do… but not so much when healing from a broken rib.
One week later, I was up on the stationary Spin Bike riding. One week after that, I was back on my mountain bike riding easy trails. One month after my fall, I was back at 100% training on my mountain bike.
Let me be perfectly clear… doctors and medicine and procedures are 100% important and vital. But the moral of this story is that the body is designed to heal itself. And that’s what I want you to remember.
If you’ve seen every doctor out there and tried every procedure and you aren’t seeing a shift in your healing, I want to encourage you to not give up.
Top 5 Reasons Why Your Health Is NOT Improving
1. Your body is a stagnant pond.
Think of a pond without a water source. Stagnant water will produce mosquitoes, bacteria, parasites, and other harmful insects. Now think of a pond with a water source. It has lily pads and lotus flowers and butterflies and beautiful life forms.
Your body is the same as that pond. It eliminates toxins and waste via BULLS – bowels, urine, lungs, lymph, and skin, and needs proper drainage to do so. If you literally feel “stuck,” then it’s time to work with the professionals on a personalized detox plan. If it’s at this point, your liver, kidneys, gallbladder, and pancreas have years of toxic build-up and they aren’t functioning to their fullest capacity. They are probably pushing those toxins back into the bloodstream, making you sicker and sicker, and perpetuating the cycle.
2. You aren’t drinking enough water.
This is literally one of the most basic concepts and I can’t even begin to tell you how many of us don’t drink enough water. We fill ourselves with coffee and energy drinks and sodas and alcohol. The average person should be drinking half of their body weight in ounces on a daily basis. The days that I feel a little more sluggish than normal, I’m always like… what’s going on? And then usually by the end of the day, it’s a palm to the forehead moment… OHHHHHH… I didn’t drink enough water today. Hydration is vital.
3. What are you feeding yourself?
As Hippocrates said, “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.” I get asked often about nutrition protocols and how do I know if I should eat gluten free or Paleo or Keto or AIP or…??? Start with the basics and cut out all sugar and processed foods. Your body is going to heal from foods that are ingredients, not with foods that contain ingredients. I also recommend going both gluten and dairy free and see how you feel. If things like IBS and migraines and rashes and sinus issues improve, then that’s a sign you should steer clear of those foods. But the best foods for you are the ones that make you feel GOOD. It’s going to be different for everyone. Keep a food journal and track what you eat and how you feel, and focus on making those foods a priority.
In addition, your thoughts and emotions are just as vital to feeding your soul as food is to feeding your body. Prayer, meditation, gratitude, and mindfulness are not just buzzwords, but powerful mind-body-spirit modalities.
4. Your body is in “fight or flight.”
Your body can’t tell the difference between running from the saber-toothed tiger, a fight with your spouse, or being chronically sick. A body under stress is more dangerous than you think. When your body is under stress (for any reason), it turns on the sympathetic nervous system, which is known as “fight or flight.” Your body senses that it is in danger and its primary goal is to “flee the saber-toothed tiger” and fight to stay alive. When your body is in this state, things like sleep, digestion, procreation, and healing are at the bottom of its priorities. A body switched over to the parasympathetic nervous system is ready to “rest and digest” and “feed and breed.” In other words, operate as the body should.
5. Only the symptoms are being treated.
While having good intentions, many traditional Medical Doctors only treat the symptom. Headache? Take some aspirin. Runny nose? Take some decongestant. When you have an autoimmune disease, chronic illness, or even mystery symptoms, it’s common for doctors to dismiss your symptoms because they can’t attach them to a disease. Functional and alternative practitioners are known for being “medical detectives” and searching for root cause healing. It’s a much more thorough process to dig deep into root cause healing, they may uncover things like viruses, infections, parasites, and even repressed trauma.
