Homemade Elderberry Syrup

  • 1 Cup Dried elderberries
  • 3+1 Cups Water
  • 1 Cup Honey
  • 1/4 Cup Arrowroot powder
  • 1 tsp Ground ginger optional
  • 1 tsp Ground cinnamon optional


  1. Place elderberries and 3 cups water (and optional spices) in a medium saucepan.

  2. Bring to a boil.

  3. Reduce heat to a simmer for 30-45 minutes.

  4. Remove from heat and cool.

  5. Carefully mash the berries using a spoon.

  6. Strain the mixture into a glass bowl, making sure you squeeze all of the elderberry juice out. (Use a strainer or cheesecloth.)

  7. In a separate jar, add 1 cup water and 1/4 cup arrowroot. Fasten tightly and shake until the arrowroot is dissolved.

  8. Pour elderberry liquid back into the saucepan and simmer.

  9. Add the arrowroot +  water mixture and stir.

  10. Once cool again, add the honey.

  11. Shake before using.
