It’s a simple task we do daily or weekly. We wash our clothes, towels, and sheets. But do you know the dangers lurking in your washing machine? You need to read this before adding that laundry detergent. The dangers of these ingredients will surprise you.
How many chemicals are acceptable to be on your clothes and in essence, absorbed into skin and your bloodstream? What about your family or your baby? What if I told you that many of these chemicals are linked to hormone imbalance, endocrine disruption, respiratory dysfunction, and even cancer? Would you think twice about your laundry detergent or would you tell me that I’m full of it?
Did you know that while the European Union has banned more than 1,400 harmful chemicals from personal care and cleaning products, the United States has not even banned 50 of these chemicals?
I like to make my own laundry detergent, but our family’s go-to brand is MyGreenFills. Why? It’s made with 100% naturally non-toxic ingredients, it’s delivered to your door, it comes in reusable jugs and pouches to reduce waste… AND… it’s less expensive than store brands.
My friends over at MyGreenFills recently wrote an article discussing the worst 5 chemicals in laundry detergent. You can read the entire article on their website, but here’s a preview.
Dichlorobenzene (Benzene)
This chemical is used in dryer sheets, fabric softeners, paint thinners, and room fresheners. It’s known to cause respiratory issues and even heart attacks. When combined with chlorine (hello washing machine), it turns into DDT.
Nonylphenol Ethoxylates (NP’s, NPE’s, Nonozynols)
These carcinogens are known to cause allergic and skin rashes and are endocrine disruptors. They are harmful to aquatic life and have been found in breast milk.
UV/Optical Brighteners
These chemicals help to brighten and whiten clothes. Like the other chemicals, they are carcinogens and endocrine disruptors.
1,4Dioxane (Diethylene Dioxide/Diethylene Ether/Dioxane)
1,4 Dioxane is an ether, and when “ethoxylated” is Sodium laurel sulphate (SLS). SLS can be found in not just laundry detergent, but other products such as skin care, toothpaste, and shampoo. 1,4 Dioxane has been known to cause cancer in animals. Oh and PS – don’t assume that eco-friendly and all-natural products are free of SLS.
Unspecified Fragrance (Parfum)
On any product (think makeup, skin care, cleaning products, candles… anything), there is a “loophole” that companies do not have to define what falls into this label. So companies can hide anything they want under this label.
Psst… want easy to follow instructions on how to make all of your favorite household cleaners… the all-natural way? It’s eezy peezy! Click below…
My challenge for you… educate yourself. Read labels. Research ingredients. You don’t have to make your own laundry detergent or even purchase from MyGreenFills. There are many brands out there to pick from. But make a commitment towards taking steps for a healthier, greener life.
