Sometimes, even with the best of intentions, your doctors will fail you. We live in a society where information is at our fingertips. Today I’m sharing my story of how I took ownership of my own health, and 3 easy ways that you too can take your health into your own hands.
2010. Cancer Happened. One year after treatment ended, and after way too many blood tests, I was finally diagnosed with Hashimoto’s, an autoimmune thyroid disorder, where your body attacks itself. It was a one-two gut punch to my health. I was disappointed that my doctors didn’t catch it sooner, but with the diagnosis, I had hope for better health.
Even after the diagnosis and new meds, I still never recovered. Five years after cancer treatment ended, I was still sick. Every. Single. Day. My Endo kept tweaking my meds, but nothing was working.
I woke up so tired, I felt like I hadn’t slept in several days. The fatigue was so bad it was painful. It literally hurt to stay awake. My bed was my best friend. The migraines would be so bad, I could barely see. My stomach was in a constant state of nausea and there were days that it was normal to take four to five trips to the bathroom to launch a space shuttle.
I finally took matters into my own hands. I read and researched like my life depended on it, because it did.
I went clean. Overnight. One year later, I’m a completely different person. I’m still on the journey, as it is a marathon, not a sprint, and it’s better health every single day.
Take Ownership of Your Health
I have met so many people who have been to five, eight, and ten doctors and specialists without success. Doctors pride themselves on the Hippocratic Oath (first, do no harm) and I honestly believe that 98% of them mean well. But doctors are only trained in what they are trained in. They look at mitigating the symptoms or diagnosing a condition, and not always getting at the root cause. And with limited time during appointments, more and more of us are becoming sicker and frustrated with our failing health.
You don’t have to be a victim of your own health. You can take control. Here are three ways to start:
Take a hard look at your diet and lifestyle.
I’m not going to sugar coat this for you. Your first step to better health is always, always, always going to be your diet. Take an honest assessment of how much sugar you eat on a daily basis. Are there foods that cause you distress after you eat them? How much fast food do you eat?
What about your lifestyle? Do you drink a lot? Smoke? How much do you exercise? How much water do you consume every day, or do you drink soda instead? How much sleep do you get? How is your stress level?
We all know the basics, but it’s what we decide to do or not do is what counts. Make the changes that you know you need to make.
Research TRUSTED sources and keep an open mind.
These two go hand in hand. The Internet can be your best friend or worst enemy. The more you research, the more you need to keep an open mind. New ideas and concepts will start to become clear to you. What are you going to do with this information? How are you going to change? Oh and PS – let me fill you in on a little secret… there is a HUGE world of information beyond that one website you always go to!
Be your own advocate.
While it’s always recommended to work with your medical practitioner, I didn’t wait to deal with all of the tests and bureaucracy. I ordered some of my own lab tests, and was armed with the results and information to have informed and intelligence discussions with my doctors. Interestingly, the results were a confirmation of things I already knew, like food sensitivities.
