I have a confession to make. I’m a Swiffer-a-holic. I love to Swiffer. As good as it works, it still doesn’t always get up ALL of the dirt and dust. Why not make an all-natural cleaning product that has a dual purpose to both clean and help repel insects? Essential oils to the rescue! Here’s the super simple DIY…
I use this spray on both the dry floor cloth and also the dusting cloth. Having a little moisture really helps to get the extra dust and dirt up. I use my favorite fresh scented Essential Oils. Since we are an all-natural home, we don’t use chemical pest control. And Mamma is not a fan of the creepy crawlies. There is one secret oil that keeps many common household pests away, and it blends in quite well with this mix.
Ingredients
16 oz Glass Spray Bottle
2 TBSP Castile Soap
10 drops each of the following Essential Oils:
- Eucalyptus
- Geranium
- Lavender
- Lemongrass
20 drops of Peppermint Essential Oil
Directions
Always use a glass container when working with Essential Oils. I like to use a little funnel to minimize any kind of a mess. Fill the bottle up about halfway. Add the castile soap and Essential Oils. Fill up the remainder of the bottle with water. Put the spray cap on and shake.
You will want to shake each time before using, as the oils will settle. Give your dust cloth a spritz before you sweep the floor or dust and you are good to go! Always do a spot check first on the surface when working with Essential Oils to ensure that they do not stain.
DO NOT use this on wood.

I even use it in my car! I use one of those long-handled dusters… give it a spritz and in about 20 seconds the car is clean and fresh smelling. Now THAT is something I can fit into my busy schedule!
I normally use the regular Swiffer floor sweeps and then the wet mopping pads by The Honest Company. Again, I like knowing I’m using all-natural products to clean my home.
Oh and back to the insects… Peppermint Essential Oil is the magic oil to repel many common household pests such as ants, fleas, flies, spiders, and even mice! So on the days that you are just sweeping and not actually mopping, this is a great way to boost the clean in your home, and also help keep the creepy crawlies away.

Why can’t this mixture be used on wood floors? and what would you recommend using on wood floors? I’m especially interested in keeping the bugs away in the summer. Thanks 🙂
Hi Elaine – We use it on our wood floors. Test it first, and spray it on the swiffer cloth. That statement was (unfortunately) more of a legal disclaimer that I don’t want people dumping it on their wood floors and then coming back to say they are ruined. Hope that makes sense. But give it a test whirl and it should work. Hugs, Holly
