Have you ever heard the saying that “summer bodies are made in the winter”? I am sure you have and if you have ever tried to get “fit” in April or May you were probably thinking to yourself, “Geeze I should have started sooner.” The reality is that many are putting off exercise right now for LOTS of reasons. Are you one of them?
Some aren’t exercising because they can still hide the holiday pounds behind big sweaters and leggings. Some because they don’t want to leave the house during the cold winter months. Some because they simply don’t know how or where to start and some because they have a major phobia of the gym or group fitness classes. Whatever the reason. There are lots way around that so that you too can be strong and healthy not just for this coming summer, but for the rest of your life.
The good news is you can get in amazing shape without ever leaving your home. Thanks to modern technology there are TONS of at home workout options that actually work that you can find online.
Baby Changes Everything
I learned this after having my son. My husband and I loved making a date out of going to the gym in our “pre-kid” lifetime. We enjoyed spending a few hours there after work before dinner some weeknights. I even still remember the days when we would blow an entire Sunday afternoon at the gym because we could. We loved it, but that all changed upon the arrival of our little one.
Parenthood quickly started to flip our social life and our “norms” upside down. The gym became a memory of our “past life.” I was teaching full time and our son was in daycare from 7am – 4 pm five days a week. The last thing that I wanted to do with leave him there a minute longer just so I could exercise. The mom guilt was already strong enough. I couldn’t handle adding another hour on there after I hadn’t seen him all day.
For awhile I just let myself go and so did my husband. We focused on just being parents, but our eating habits and overall health started to go downhill quickly. Being a parent is difficult enough, but when you add in the stress of NOT exercising it actually makes you feel pretty lousy. I am sure that so many of you can relate to what we went through.
You Can Work Out at Home!
I eventually found a lot of success with a Beachbody program. I was a “challenger” in a challenge group which gave me access to an accountability group for help with my motivation and my nutrition. This was key for me to be able to actually follow through with the program I bought. I have found that it’s easy to buy a fitness program with good intentions, but it’s hard to stick with it. This made it so I didn’t quit on the days that I wanted to. It worked for me. It allowed me to finally fit exercise into my life again because I could do it on my time in the basement of my home. Sometimes that “time” was at 4:30 am before work. Some days it was after bedtime and some weekends it was during nap time, but it allowed me to never have to sacrifice time with my son.
There were even days when the workouts had to happen when he was awake or with me. Instead of using that as an excuse, I talked about what I was up doing, encouraged him to try the moves along with me and kept him entertained with my crazy stretching and lifting.
Now three years later, I still workout daily from home and have never been in better shape. The best part is that it only takes me 30 minutes a day. Gone are the days of two hour dates with the elliptical at the gym because let’s be honest, momma ain’t got time for that now.
If you are that person who has spent the winter months “vegging out” on the couch, I would encourage you to first find a friend to do some workouts with you and TELL people what you are up to. There is something so powerful about sharing your plans that makes you more committed to sticking with them. Then I encourage you to discover what is it that you love? Is it running, yoga, kickboxing, weight lifting? Figure that out first then find a program that fits into your schedule on your time. Pinterest has tons of beginner workouts, Beachbody has great programs for all levels of fitness and there are of course tons of other programs that work great too.
I think it’s less important WHAT you are doing and more important that you simply do SOMETHING. I promise not only will it help keep off the winter weight, but it will also keep away the winter blues too. Use exercise to build a foundation in your life for total health. Fall in love with it and know that you can rock whatever type of program best suits your lifestyle. Be okay with the fact that sometimes the gym just won’t fit into your lifestyle right now. You still have the power to get into some seriously good shape regardless WHERE the exercise is taking place.
