Stocking Stuffer Traditions

Growing up, our tradition was to open up the stockings on Christmas eve.  I always got to open one present before church, usually a piece of jewelry, and then opened the remainder after church. Mom Santa tried to cleverly disguise the presents by wrapping them in tissue paper, but I loved to guess what each item was.  Toothpaste!  Toothbrush!  Lip balm!  And then Dad and I would get those little books filled with candy treats, and we would open them up right away and swap our favorite flavors.

In 8th grade when I took Home Economics, I learned to knit.  My proudest accomplishment was to knit a Christmas stocking.  Each year, it grew bigger and bigger as the presents would stretch it out. And of course I expected it to be filled up! Whodathunk all those years ago that this bastion of creativity in my brain would result in me becoming a blogger LOL!

Nowadays, I am the Mom Santa and in charge of filling everyone’s stockings.  We have a gas fireplace and our stockings are hung on the mantle.  I love their fair isle design, and our three stockings are monogrammed.  And we try to ensure they are filled with healthier options.  If you too are looking for healthier options for your stockings, read on for a few great ideas for body, mind, and spirit.

For the Mind

Glass Water Bottle – While many plastic water bottles are being made these days without Bisphenol A (BPA), the substitution is often Bisphenol S (BPS), which is a similar chemical with similar health concerns.  Glass water bottles may be a bit heavier to carry, but they are a lot safer.  Your brain is made of approximately 75% water, so be sure to hydrate properly – on average half your body weight in ounces per day!

Puzzle Book – Everything is app-ed out these days but nothing beats sitting down with a good ole fashioned puzzle book to help keep your mind sharp.

For the Spirit

Journal – Journaling is a great way to calm your thoughts and channel any anxieties.  Be sure to include a nice pen to write with.

Mini Succulent – Even in the tightest of spaces, mini succulents add a touch of green and life to lift anyone’s spirit.
