Life does not have to end of your diet is on an allergy protocol. There are so many ways to adapt your favorite recipes! Here is one of my favorites – a version of Kellogg’s Scotcheroos modified to be gluten free, vegan, no peanuts, and minimal sugar. More, please!
Yes, I know you are skeptical. One of my co-workers (who will remain nameless to protect the innocent) literally licked the wrapper when I brought in a batch to work. They are a tough crowd, and this treat got many thumbs up! The original recipe calls for corn syrup. Why on earth does any dessert need corn syrup these days? This modified version is sweet enough without any added sugar. The honey and SunButter create a butterscotch-esque taste that is far healthier!
If you are an allergy mom – this recipe will be the hit of all future parties. You need not have any fear – your child will have a safe treat to eat, and the other kids won’t notice the difference and will love them just as much (if not more) than traditional Scotcheroos.
Keep in mind, this is made with “real” chocolate, which has a little more of a bitter taste than the traditional milk and sugar-filled chocolate you are used to. If you want to make this with traditional semi-sweet chocolate chips out of that infamous yellow bag and you don’t have any restrictions, by all means, go for it. Stepson calls it “adult chocolate” as in… kids like it sweeter, but this is the chocolate that adults like. I love his way of explaining it.

We love scotcheroos, but I rarely make them. The sugar in this is crazy. We aren’t an allergy family, but my 3-year-old does not need any more sugar in his diet! Thank you so much for sharing this recipe. Pinning it to make later! 🙂
Hi Kelsey – Thank you so much for stopping by to share! If you are fine using regular Toll House chocolate chips, your 3-year-old will probably like the chocolate in them better than the “real” chocolate since they aren’t as bitter tasting. Worth a small amount of extra sugar since you are leaving it out everywhere else! Hope to see you again soon. Hugs, Holly
Sounds very nice indeed.
Thanks – from a Gluten Free girl!
Hi Dawn – Thanks so much! Hugs, Holly
These look great. I can’t wait to try!
Hi Heather – Thanks so much! Hugs, Holly
Hi there. Honey isn’t vegan as it comes from an animal. However you could sub maple syrup or brown rice syrup to make it vegan. Ange 🙂
Hi Ange – Yeah… the big honey controversy in the vegan community. It’s a mixed bag whether it’s accepted or not. I’m vegan for my chronic illness so it’s not a big deal to me personally, but I know it is to others, which is why I always try and include the disclaimer and substitutes. I do love to add maple syrup as a sweet additive too! Thanks so much for stopping by to share and I hope to see you again soon! Hugs, Holly
