Whether you call it Puppy Chow or Muddy Buddies, the sweet combination of chocolate, peanut butter, and powdered sugar is like heaven in a bowl. And then you grow up. Or can’t eat half of the ingredients. This is the grown up and allergy friendly version – gluten free, vegan, peanut free, and no extra sugar. Much easier on the waistline!
First – the obvious substitutions. Sun butter is an easy substitute for peanut butter. I used Gluten Free Chocolate Chex Mix and Van’s Gluten Free Cocoa Sensation cereals.
Arrowroot has the consistency of powdered sugar but is a little more flour-like. You can certainly use the traditional powdered sugar like the traditional version, but if you want to minimize the amount of sugar, then substitute arrowroot. I haven’t tried mixing it half and half, but that might work too… to make it sweeter, but still minimize the amount of sugar.
I asked Stepson if he wanted to try it. He is usually suspicious of my new creations.
“Do you want to try it?”
I get the side eye, and he responds, “YOLO.”
Really? Really? You just YOLO-ed my food?
If teen-speak is a foreign language to you… YOLO = you only live once. Like something you would yell before bungee jumping. Or eating peanut free, gluten free and vegan Puppy Chow.
