Mold is not only ugly, but it can be the catalyst to some pretty serious health issues. Detoxing from complications from mold can be a long and difficult process. The bathroom is one of those places where mold seems to be in abundant supply. Mold growth isn’t about cleanliness. It doesn’t matter how often you clean your bathroom. It forms when the eco-system in your bathroom (or home) is both humid and not properly ventilated.

We teach about the health effects of mold in the Mystery Symptom Master Class:

  • Why is mold such an issue today?
  • How can people test for mold in their homes and bodies?
  • Why do some people get sick from mold and others don’t?
  • How do you change your environment to prevent regrowth?

In the meantime, you are here because you want to get rid of mold in your shower. Let me begin by saying that mold removal is a controversial topic. There are as many differing opinions as there are experts. You have a toxic substance (mold) and many of your options to remove it are expensive, invasive, or even toxic themselves.

A few spots in your shower is different than dealing with invasive mold in your home after a flood. But mold is still mold. What’s the right way to remove mold in your shower? The way that makes you feel good about your decision. Educate yourself, weigh the pros and cons, and make the best decision for you, your family, and everyone’s health.

Does Bleach Kill Mold?

In and of itself, bleach is a highly toxic substance. It should never, ever be mixed with ammonia as it produces toxic and even deadly fumes. Does bleach kill mold? Yes and no.

Bleach does work on killing mold on non-porous surfaces such as tile or porcelain. It does not work on porous surfaces like wood or drywall. It also only kills the mold on the surface. Bleach does not reach the roots, which means the mold will grow back.

According to the EPA, “The use of a chemical or biocide that kills organisms such as mold (chlorine bleach, for example) is not recommended as a routine practice during mold cleanup.”

How to Remove Mold in the Shower

Vinegar

Straight up white-distilled vinegar will kill approximately 80% of mold. Don’t dilute it, don’t mix it with anything, just pour in a spray bottle and spray with a saturating spray.

Concrobium Mold Spray

Concrobuim Mold Spray was Dr. Jackson’s top recommendation in the Mystery Symptom Master Class. It works on both porous and non-porous surfaces and does not contain bleach, ammonia, or volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Be sure to follow the directions.

FAQ

Safety First

Regardless of what method you use, safety first!

  1. Even though we recommend that you do not use bleach, we must say that bleach should never, ever be mixed with ammonia as it produces toxic and even deadly fumes.
  2. Disturbing mold spores will cause them to be airborne. Wear gloves, goggles, and a NIOSH-approved respirator rated N95 or higher.
  3. Ensure the area is well-ventilated during clean-up. Open windows and doors and do not run your heating or air-conditioning system during clean-up.
  4. Any contaminated materials should be placed in plastic bags and discarded.

How to Keep Mold from Returning

Make sure you’ve removed all of the mold. If there is any left under the surface, it will grow back. Additionally, mold can potentially grow on any area that stays wet for more than two days, so you want to also prevent it from returning.

Fix all leaks and ensure that you’ve eliminated the water source.

Seal any cracks or damage in the grout or caulking.

You ideally want the humidity to be 50% or lower. Increase ventilation by installing a bathroom fan, opening a window, or using a portable fan after your shower.

While a dehumidifier might be overkill for your bathroom, if you do have a persistent problem, it might be worth investing in a small one.

I use this all-natural Shower Spray DIY which contains essential oils which may help to minimize mold and mildew in your shower.
