What if I told you that you can eat chocolate for breakfast (or anytime!) in a way that gives you sustained energy without the caffeine jitters… AND is full of healthy superfoods? These Maca Matcha Chocolate Bars may make you raise an eyebrow, but they are gluten free, dairy free, vegan and a superfood treat you will want to make again and again. Get the recipe here…
I was devastated when my body decided it couldn’t handle coffee anymore and I had to give it up. I drink green tea to give me an energy boost, but let’s be honest… there are plenty of days I need something more. That extra boost in the morning or mid-afternoon. I know you know what I mean!
These are NOT your kid’s chocolate bars. These are specifically made with superfoods with ONE purpose – to give your body an energy boost and full of super healthy nutrients. Ok, that’s two. Moving on. You can certainly feed these to your kids if they are ok with some caffeine, but they are also going to be a little more expensive to make.
You can make the kid-friendly and non-superfood version of the same chocolate bar HERE.
You can enjoy these chocolate bars alone. Or add them to your favorite chocolate companions. I’m partial to a big plate of strawberries in the morning with half a bar. But seriously… the possibilities are endless.
Remember too that they have zero preservatives, so you will want to keep them refrigerated and note they will melt in warmer temperatures. I actually use this to my advantage. You know how drained you feel after a long appointment or grocery trip? Cut up a few strawberries and place them in a small glass container. Then place a few broken pieces of the chocolate over the strawberries. Add your lid and remember to grab a fork. Leave it in the car in a sunny spot and you will come back out to melted chocolate over strawberries. You. Are. Welcome.

Superfoods
Cacao
Raw cacao is crazy healthy! Let’s start with 20 times the antioxidants than in blueberries. It’s also high in magnesium, iron, and calcium. The best part – it is full of happy mood-boosting serotonin.
Maca
Maca is a cruciferous root vegetable. It’s rich in antioxidants, and full of fiber, vitamin C, copper, iron, and 20 amino acids. Maca is an adaptogen which may help to enhance energy, mood, and memory and boost sexual health. I prefer and personally recommend Dr. Anna Cabeca’s Mighty Maca because it is specifically formulated with 40+ ingredients to give you increased stamina, boost energy and metabolism and more. But if you prefer a lower price point, then Thrive Market has an Organic Maca Powder that is a good quality.
Matcha
Matcha powdered green tea has 137 times more antioxidants than regularly brewed green tea. It is packed with antioxidants, boots metabolism, detoxifies, calms and energizes at the same time, and provides vitamin C, selenium, chromium, zinc, and magnesium.
Pro Tips
Pro Tip #1 – If you are like me and use the 2 saucepan method for a double boiler, you want enough water in the bottom that it doesn’t run out and burn your chocolate, but not too much that when it boils, it doesn’t splash onto the chocolate.
Pro Tip #2 – Chocolate and water are not friends. Your chocolate will seize up if it comes in contact with water. Refer back to Pro Tip #1.
Pro Tip #3 – When everything is melted together and you are ready to pour the chocolate into molds, you can go directly from saucepan to mold. BUT… I recommend pouring the chocolate into a 4 cup or large size glass measuring cup. It makes it much easier to pour the chocolate into the molds in a consistent manner and you reduce the risk of making a mess.
