What do I love more than sleep? Nothing. Except for the wonderful scent of lavender as I drift off into dreamytime. Today’s adventure is my first foray into making homemade lotions and potions. You can call it either lotion or body butter but it’s dual purpose is to heal your skin and provide aromatherapy during your restorative night’s sleep.
Have you seen the ingredients on the labels of your average drug store lotion? I’ve officially become one of those “off the deep end” (albeit completely normal LOL!) people who are breaking up with all things toxic. There are only three ingredients in this lotion, and all three of them are all-natural.
Ingredients
Equal parts Organic Coconut Oil and Organic Raw Shea Butter. (I used 4 TBSP of each).
The Lavender Essential Oil is known for its qualities to help promote sleep.
Directions
Scoop out equal parts of the Shea Butter and Coconut Oil into a microwave-safe bowl. For a small Mason Jar container, I used 4 TBSP of each. Microwave for a minute or until mostly melted. You can also use a double boiler if you prefer.
Stir until most of the pieces are melted.
Stir in Lavender Oil. I used about 75 drops because I like a stronger scent. You may want to use less to your preference.
Place in refrigerator for about an hour until hardened.
Transfer to a stand mixer, and mix on medium high for about 5 minutes. Think of it as the same as creating stiff peaks with your eggs when making a souffle. You want the mixture to be soft and fluffy.
Scoop out and add to a glass container. I painted the lid and glued a vintage bauble to make it extra cute.

It’s a lot heavier and greasier than your drug store brand lotion, so it’s definitely a night-time lotion. Use caution if you sleep on satin sheets or wear satin PJ’s as it may stain. I use it at night on my feet, elbows, and hands and wake up with crazy soft skin!

I love this! I’ve been looking for a nice lotion / creme and have not found what I want. This looks so easy and natural. Your photos are beautiful too. Visiting from @thesitsgirls sharefest. 🙂
HI Tammi – Thank you so much for stopping by and for your kind words! It’s a thicker “butter” kind of creme so definitely for night time but I love it! Hope to see you again soon. Hugs, Holly
I love lavender and it definitely makes it a great before bed lotion. Nothing puts me to sleep better than Lavender. Thank you for sharing at Merry Monday!
Hi Amanda – I love just laying in bed and breathing in the lavender before I fall asleep! Hugs, Holly
Holly, I have long been a lover of Lavender. I have some in a basket that I keep in my den close to my favorite chair. I never thought about making a lotion with it, but I can see where that would be so helpful at bed time.
That is probably marvelous. I love shea butter.
I will give it a try.
Thanks for sharing it on #TipTuesday.
Hi Debbie – I’m looking up other ways to use the shea butter too. Love it! Hugs, Holly
Came across your website on pinterest and have been looking for a night time cream. I was wondering how long this is good for and also does it need to be in the frig?
Hi Amanda – Thanks so much for stopping by! I guess “technically” you don’t have to put it in the fridge to harden, but you are basically combining two oils together and it helps with the emulsification (combining) process. I would say an hour or so just to help them harden back up before you use the beaters to “fluff.” That’s it. You can keep it out at room temperature after that. The lotion is going to feel greasy when you first apply, but it will melt into your skin after a couple minutes. Hope this helps and hope to see you again soon! Hugs, Holly
i’ve been experimenting with different recipes & i’ve found that a person really can’t botch it up..not even me!. however i found that i like to add a bit less coconut oil, it comes out denser & somewhat thicker & creamier/silkier..calling it “butter” just doesn’t seem to do this concoction justice. i love to apply right before i exit the shower if doesn’t seem to be as greasy & my skin just soaks it all in..
Hi Lisa – Thank you so much for stopping by to share! You are so right, you mix it together and there isn’t a way to mess it up… just different consistencies. I hope to see you again soon! Hugs, Holly
I grow lavendar. For gifts I pile dried flowers in a small cloth bag, add a string for hanging, then stitch it up completely so it doesn’t spill. The bag gets tucked between bed pillows or hung close by, promoting a calming scent. I need a recipe for a spray bottle, using the flowers – not essential oil. Can you help? Thanx!
Hi Dianne – Thank you so much for stopping by to share! How wonderful that you grow lavender… I do too! What a great idea to add the flowers… let me look into it and maybe do another DIY soon. Hope to see you again soon. Hugs, Holly
