For some women, breast imaging is something you check off the box every year. For many more, they are scared, worried, and full of anxiety as they wait for a possible breast cancer diagnosis. The doctors, technologists, and staff at Fairfax Radiological Consultants understand that angst. They are not just knowledgeable, but sensitive and caring because they know how scary and life-changing the results of these procedures can potentially be. The Scene of the Crime
Going back to the scene of the crime at Fairfax Radiological Consultants. I remember that day like it was yesterday. I had found the lump on my own and by accident. My primary care physician eased my worry by saying, “it’s probably nothing,” but took preventative measures and sent me to get a mammogram. At 38 years old, I had never had a mammogram. I remember sitting in the lobby and being full of fear. I also remember going back for the biopsy, even more afraid.
My head was telling me that I was too young to have breast cancer. But from the second I felt the lump, I knew deep down that this was my fate. I knew my world would never be the same again. My boyfriend and I were talking about getting married. I was a surrogate Stepmom to his 5-year-old son. I had a family who loved me more than anything. I had climbed the corporate ladder to a very successful career. I had a happy and vibrant life. I worked hard and played harder.
The unknown was terrifying. Sitting in the waiting room…. in limbo… not knowing… pure agony.
A Sensitive, Caring, and Knowledgeable Staff
Fast forward time, I’m back at Fairfax Radiological Consultants for my annual mammogram.
For some women, breast imaging is something you check off the box every year. For many more, they are scared, worried, and full of anxiety as they wait for a possible breast cancer diagnosis.
The doctors, technologists, and staff at FRC understand that angst. They are not just knowledgeable, expertly trained and professional, they are also sensitive and caring because they know how scary and life-changing the results of these procedures can potentially be. Big smiles at the front desk. Someone in the dressing area helping you with a clip to keep your gown closed. Kind words and empathy during the mammogram procedure. It’s all seamless and genuine.
Most important for me was the follow up with Dr. Berman to discuss the image results. It wasn’t just, “you look great… nothing to worry about… see you next year.” She showed me the current images and explained what everything means. She pulled up the images from my initial diagnosis 9 years ago and showed the progression of how my breast density has changed over the years. She also talked about breast health, self-exams, and lymphatic drainage.
The Mammogram Experience
Fairfax Radiological Consultants offers Screening Mammography, Diagnostic Mammography, and Lower Dose 3D Mammography. As a breast cancer survivor, I personally get the 3D Mammogram because it’s more accurate with improved cancer detection, and uses the lowest dose of radiation available.
For standard precaution, the procedure was performed with a protective lead apron to protect my uterus area, and I also received one for the neck area to protect my thyroid.
The mammogram itself was tolerable. FRC uses the SmartCurve™ technology which 93% of women reported less pain, less pinch, and less discomfort. Due to my size (or lack thereof smile), I was not a candidate so they used a different flexible tray with me.
Let’s face it. Getting your boobs squeezed in a vice is never a fun procedure. But between the advanced technology that they use plus the sweetest technologist performing the procedure, it was as pleasantly tolerable as could be.
