A few years ago, I made some big health changes. To celebrate my new lifestyle, I upcycled my first container of vegan food into this adorable DIY for several succulent plants. Today, this project is not only honoring my health, but also Mom, and Mother Earth.
The DIY itself is pretty easy but it’s the backstory which totally has my heart. Awhile back, I made a decision to drastically alter my diet in order to regain my health. Many of you have followed my story, but if you are unfamiliar with these recent changes, you can read about them HERE.
First I eliminated gluten from my diet and then became vegan soon thereafter. It was a difficult process to make the switch. For some reason, I kept the empty (and cleaned out of course) container of my first-ever vegan butter. It was symbolic of my new lifestyle and health improvements.
Fast forward, I knew exactly what I wanted to do with it and here we are today! With a few friends to join along!
Container DIY – What You Need
A container of sorts – upcycled is best!
Mod Podge and an old brush
It is a little tricky to get started, but once you are going, it’s easy. Apply Mod Podge onto the container and then wrap the twine, starting at the bottom. Every other row (or so), stop and apply Mod Podge to the top of the twine as well. Don’t worry – it will dry clear! At the top, tuck under the end and you are all set!
Succulent DIY – What You Need
One succulent per container
The process that I used was very similar to when I upcycled some vintage tins into containers for cactus succulents.
First, fill the bottom of the container with about an inch or two of pebbles. It’s not an exact science – any amount will do!
Next, add in the dirt until almost the top. Some people like dirt on the top, some more pebbles on top of the dirt. Your choice!
The succulents do not have deep roots, so you won’t have to make a lot of space for them on top. It’s almost like you just lay them down and push them into the dirt.
See… I told you it was easy! This would be a fun project to do together with the kids.
Or better yet… give as a Mother’s Day present, hostess present, neighbor present, the possibilities are endless! Oh and PS – Mom and MIL… earmuffs! Just pretend you didn’t read this ok?
