My Great Aunt Dot was the baker in the family. Before she passed, I made sure that she passed down all of her family favorite recipes to me. Her Buckeyes were always a special treat. If you don’t know what a Buckeye is… it’s pretty much like a peanut butter and chocolate truffle. It’s goooood!
The Chocolate Story
This is Aunt Dot. She passed quite a few years ago at the age of 89.
Aunt Dot used paraffin wax to harden the outer shell. I know that no one really uses wax to cook with these days, but it’s an old recipe and that is just how it was.
I normally buy whatever peanut butter is on sale and I have a coupon for. But hands down, Peter Pan peanut butter is the best peanut butter for her Buckeyes. And I would recommend going with either semi sweet chocolate or milk chocolate. The lighter chocolate along with the peanut butter gives it a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup inspired taste.
And in case you ever wanted to know… Factoid #572 about me… when I was in college, I interned at the Reese’s plant in Hershey, PA. Oooooohhhhh yeah BABY! That was the BEST.JOB.EVER!!!!!
